As an Ophthalmic Technician in the 4V0X1 career field, you will play a crucial role in providing comprehensive eye care and support to the United States Air Force. Your responsibilities will include assisting ophthalmologists and optometrists in diagnosing and treating various eye conditions, conducting specialized ophthalmic tests, and ensuring the overall eye health of military personnel and their families. This position requires technical expertise, attention to detail, and a commitment to delivering high-quality eye care.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Patient Evaluation and Testing: Conduct preliminary eye examinations and evaluations under the supervision of ophthalmologists or optometrists. Perform visual acuity testing, tonometry (measuring intraocular pressure), and color vision testing. Assist with specialized diagnostic tests such as visual field testing, corneal topography, and optical coherence tomography (OCT).

2. Ophthalmic Procedures and Treatments: Assist ophthalmologists and optometrists in various ophthalmic procedures and treatments, including assisting with surgical procedures such as cataract surgery or laser vision correction. Administer topical ophthalmic medications as directed. Prepare surgical instruments, sterilize equipment, and maintain a sterile environment during procedures.

3. Contact Lens Services: Assist in the fitting, evaluation, and instruction of patients using contact lenses. Provide patient education on proper contact lens hygiene, insertion, and removal techniques. Perform contact lens adjustments and troubleshoot contact lens-related issues.

4. Ophthalmic Records and Documentation: Maintain accurate and up-to-date ophthalmic records for patients, including medical histories, examination findings, and test results. Document patient care and treatment plans in electronic medical record systems. Adhere to confidentiality and security protocols for patient information.

5. Clinic Operations and Support: Assist in the overall management of the ophthalmic clinic, including scheduling appointments, managing patient flow, and ensuring a clean and organized clinical environment. Assist in inventory management of ophthalmic supplies and medications. Adhere to infection control protocols and maintain a safe working environment.

Qualifications:

- U.S. citizenship and eligibility for a Secret security clearance.

- Successful completion of Basic Military Training and the Ophthalmic Apprentice Course.

- Knowledge of ophthalmic anatomy, procedures, and ocular diseases.

- Familiarity with ophthalmic instruments, equipment, and diagnostic tests.

- Excellent attention to detail and ability to follow instructions accurately.

- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

- Ability to work well in a team environment and collaborate with healthcare professionals.

- Basic computer skills for data entry and record keeping.

- Knowledge of infection control protocols and safety practices.

- Ability to handle sensitive patient information with discretion.
