As a Histopathology Technician in the 4T0X2 career field, you will play a crucial role in providing accurate and timely diagnostic information to support medical treatment decisions in the United States Air Force. Your responsibilities will include preparing and examining tissue samples, performing laboratory tests, and collaborating with healthcare professionals to ensure the accurate interpretation of histological specimens. This position requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to delivering high-quality pathology services.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Tissue Processing and Embedding: Receive, process, and prepare tissue specimens for microscopic examination. Perform tissue fixation, dehydration, clearing, and embedding in paraffin wax. Ensure proper labeling and documentation of specimens.

2. Microtomy and Slide Preparation: Operate microtomes to section paraffin-embedded tissues into thin slices for mounting on microscope slides. Prepare stained slides using various staining techniques, such as hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining. Ensure the quality and clarity of slides for accurate interpretation.

3. Microscopic Examination: Use light microscopy to examine prepared slides and identify cellular and tissue abnormalities. Identify and differentiate normal and abnormal tissue structures. Collaborate with pathologists or medical professionals to provide accurate and timely diagnoses.

4. Special Staining and Immunohistochemistry: Perform special staining techniques to enhance specific tissue components or highlight pathological features. Assist in immunohistochemistry procedures to detect specific antigens or markers within tissue sections. Follow established protocols and quality control measures.

5. Laboratory Quality Control and Documentation: Maintain accurate and up-to-date laboratory records and documentation. Adhere to quality control procedures to ensure accurate and reliable test results. Perform instrument maintenance and calibration. Monitor and maintain adequate inventory levels of histology supplies and reagents.

Qualifications:

- U.S. citizenship and eligibility for a Secret security clearance.

- Successful completion of Basic Military Training and the Histopathology Apprentice Course.

- Knowledge of histological techniques, tissue processing, and staining procedures.

- Proficiency in using microtomes and performing microtomy techniques.

- Familiarity with special staining techniques and immunohistochemistry.

- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow standard operating procedures.

- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

- Basic computer skills for data entry and record keeping.

- Knowledge of laboratory safety protocols and quality control measures.

- Ability to handle sensitive patient information with discretion.
