As a Mental Health Service Specialist in the 4C0X1 career field, you will play a critical role in providing mental health support and services to military personnel and their families within the United States Air Force. Your responsibilities will include conducting mental health assessments, providing counseling and therapy, and assisting in the management of mental health programs. This position requires a strong understanding of mental health principles, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to promoting mental well-being.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Mental Health Assessments: Conduct comprehensive mental health assessments to evaluate individuals' mental, emotional, and behavioral well-being. Utilize standardized assessment tools, interviews, and observation to gather relevant information. Assess and identify mental health conditions, develop treatment plans, and make appropriate referrals as needed.
2. Counseling and Therapy: Provide individual and group counseling to address mental health concerns, including stress management, relationship issues, grief, and trauma. Utilize evidence-based therapeutic techniques to support clients in achieving their mental health goals. Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement effective treatment plans.
3. Crisis Intervention: Respond to mental health crises and emergencies, providing immediate support and intervention. Assess risk factors, conduct safety assessments, and facilitate appropriate crisis management strategies. Coordinate with emergency services and other healthcare professionals to ensure the safety and well-being of individuals in crisis.
4. Mental Health Program Support: Assist in the management and coordination of mental health programs and initiatives. Contribute to the development and implementation of prevention and outreach activities, such as mental health education campaigns and workshops. Maintain accurate and confidential records of services provided and assist in data collection for program evaluation.
5. Collaboration and Consultation: Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and chaplains, to provide comprehensive mental health care. Consult with command staff, medical personnel, and community agencies to coordinate care and support overall mental health initiatives. Foster a supportive and inclusive environment for individuals seeking mental health services.
Qualifications:
- U.S. citizenship and eligibility for a Secret security clearance.
- Successful completion of Basic Military Training and the Mental Health Service Apprentice Course.
- Knowledge of mental health assessment tools, counseling techniques, and therapeutic modalities.
- Understanding of mental health diagnoses, treatment approaches, and crisis intervention strategies.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to establish rapport and build trust with clients.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
- Proficiency in using electronic health record systems and other relevant software.
- Basic computer skills for data entry and record keeping.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment and collaborate with other healthcare professionals.
