How Long is Tech School in the Air Force?
Tech School lengths are different for all Air Force Jobs. To see how long Tech Schools are for each Air Force job, go to our Air Force job list page.
When you look at each job, the training days mean the total number of days you will be in class. This does NOT include weekends or holidays. For example, my tech school was for Aircraft Structural Maintenance which has a tech school length of 76 days. There are 5 class days in a week, occasionally 4 days a week for holidays or down days. Lets do the math of how long my tech school was. Take the 76 total days of class and divide that by 5 days a week = 15.2 weeks of class. You’ll keep this number for the next step.
Now you can take your projected graduation date of BMT which is usually 2 months from your ship date roughly. You’ll add about 2-4 weeks to it, and that will be your estimated class start date window. Now you’ll count out 15.2 weeks from there. If you see any federal holidays, you won’t go to school during those days and observed days. Also, during Christmas to New Years you’ll usually get 2 weeks off which is called exodus. Take the number of days off that were in the 15.2 week span and add them to the end of the 15.2 weeks. This will be your estimated Tech School graduation date. This won't give you your exact Tech School graduation date but at least it will give you a rough estimate of when you’ll be done with Tech School.
Keep in mind that this does not factor in failing a section of Tech School and having to retake that section. If you fail any part of Tech School and have to retake it, this will push your graduation date back further. Some sections of Tech School can vary from 1-4 weeks or more.
Pro Tip: Don’t base your job choices off of how long your Tech School is. This only makes up a few months of your 4-6+ year career. Pick a job based on whether or not it’s a good fit for you personally.
