Airmen describing Weather

Airman with the AFSC 1W0X1 (Weather Technician) observe, record, and disseminate weather data and information. Weather Technicians use fixed and deployable meteorological sensors to measure and evaluate atmospheric and space weather conditions. They also use satellite and radar imagery, computer generated graphics, and weather communication equipment and instruments to analyze atmospheric and space data and information in order to forecast atmospheric and space weather conditions. Then, they will issues warnings and advisories to alert users to mission-critical weather if imminent or even possible. Weather Technicians understanding the weather analysis and data to enhance combat operations and training is part of the weather specialists skill set. The Air Force Weather Specialist tailors and communicates weather information to meet operational requirements and manages weather operations.

Air Force Weather Technicians (1W0X1) are responsible for observing, recording and disseminating weather data and information. They analyze weather conditions, prepare forecasts, issue weather warnings, brief weather information to pilots, observe and record space environment observations, read and interpret weather satellite imagery, climatology reports, computerized weather prediction models and Doppler weather radar imagery, and understand war fighter tactics and its relationship to weather conditions.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

• Analyze weather conditions, prepare forecasts, issue weather warnings and brief weather information to pilots
• Observe, record and transmit space environment observations
• Read and interpret weather satellite imagery, climatology reports, computerized weather prediction models and Doppler weather radar imagery
• Understand war fighter tactics and its relationship to weather conditions
• Monitor and interpret weather conditions and prepare short and long range forecasts
• Assist with forecast preparation and severe weather advisories
• Collect, analyze and interpret weather data
• Prepare reports and disseminate weather information to military personnel
• Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of weather systems and services
• Provide input to the development of new and improved weather systems
• Maintain and update weather databases
