As a Surgical Service specialist in the 4N1X1 career field, you will play a crucial role in providing surgical care and support to patients in the United States Air Force. Your responsibilities will include assisting in surgical procedures, managing surgical equipment and supplies, and ensuring a safe and sterile surgical environment. This position requires technical expertise, attention to detail, and a commitment to delivering high-quality patient care.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Surgical Assistance: Assist surgeons and other medical personnel in surgical procedures. Prepare operating rooms by sterilizing and arranging surgical instruments and equipment. Anticipate the needs of the surgical team during procedures and provide timely assistance. Maintain a sterile field and adhere to aseptic techniques to prevent infections.
2. Surgical Equipment Management: Manage and maintain surgical equipment, including sterilization, calibration, and preventive maintenance. Ensure proper functioning and availability of equipment for surgical procedures. Monitor inventory levels of surgical supplies and instruments and coordinate with supply personnel to replenish as needed.
3. Patient Care: Provide direct patient care before, during, and after surgical procedures. Assist with patient positioning, draping, and prepping. Monitor patients' vital signs and assist with anesthesia administration. Provide post-operative care and education to patients and their families.
4. Documentation and Reporting: Accurately document patient information, surgical procedures, and post-operative care in medical records and databases. Ensure proper documentation of surgical equipment usage and maintenance. Report any adverse events or concerns to appropriate medical personnel.
5. Training and Professional Development: Stay updated on advances in surgical techniques, equipment, and procedures through ongoing training and professional development. Participate in training exercises and drills to maintain readiness and proficiency. Mentor and train junior personnel in surgical techniques and protocols.
Qualifications:
- U.S. citizenship and eligibility for a Secret security clearance.
- Successful completion of Basic Military Training and the Surgical Service Apprentice Course.
- Knowledge of surgical procedures, techniques, and instruments.
- Familiarity with sterile techniques and infection control protocols.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Effective communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to remain calm and focused under pressure.
- Physical stamina and dexterity to assist in surgical procedures.
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
