Airmen Describing Cyber Systems Operations

Cyber Defense Operations in the Air Force involve the use of technology and techniques to defend, exploit, and attack in and through cyberspace. The cyber defense operations specialists work to protect the Air Force's information systems and networks from unauthorized access, use, disclosure, disruption, modification, or destruction. The typical duties of a cyber defense operator may include:

  • Monitoring and analyzing computer networks for potential threats and vulnerabilities

  • Identifying and responding to cyber-attacks on Air Force networks and systems

  • Developing and implementing plans to protect Air Force networks and systems from cyber-attacks

  • Collaborating with other military branches, federal agencies, and industry partners to share information and coordinate responses to cyber threats

  • Keeping up to date with the latest tools, techniques, and threats in the field of cyber security and cyber warfare

  • Participating in training, drills, and exercises to maintain and improve skills

  • Providing guidance and training to other Air Force personnel on cyber security best practices and procedures

Cyber defense Operators manage servers that host local applications and web applications. Most work in a typical office environment along side the same ranked peers. It's important to note that you may hold this AFSC and be pulled to do another job in the cyber career field. As an airman it is your job to be adaptable, and helpful. To do this job you also have to qualify for top secret clearance. Cyber defense Operations is an extremely versatile job, we are located all across Air Force installations, all over the world.

Knowledge Operations Management in the Air Force is responsible for the collection, analysis, and dissemination of information and intelligence. This includes tasks such as intelligence analysis, signals intelligence, and information management. Knowledge Operations Management professionals work to ensure that the Air Force has the information and intelligence it needs to make informed decisions and complete missions successfully. They also support the management of knowledge across the organization and the sharing of information with other branches of the military and government agencies.

Responsible for the coordination and distribution of information and data, Knowledge Management specialists play a critical role in every department of the Air Force. From creating launch manuals to storing and disposing of high-level documents, these professionals manage the flow, distribution, life cycle and disposal of communications and information integral to our operations.

A typical day working in Network Systems Operations in the Air Force may involve:

  • Performing system upgrades and patches to ensure that Air Force networks and systems are up-to-date and secure

  • Participating in training, drills, and exercises to maintain and improve skills

  • Providing guidance and training to other Air Force personnel on network administration best practices and procedures

  • Participating in classified and unclassified meetings with other Network Systems Operations team members and other agencies

Network Systems Operations Airmen are the IT specialists of the Air Force. They provide mission-critical voice, data, and video services, deploy and operate expeditionary communications systems, and monitor the performance of systems and circuits. Network Systems Operations Airmen are also responsible for testing and troubleshooting network systems equipment and circuits. This includes IP detection systems, which identify cybersecurity breaches, as well as cryptographic equipment. 

1D7X1D - Cyber Security Operations

As a Cyber Surety specialist in the 3D0X3 career field, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the security and integrity of information systems and networks for the United States Air Force. Your responsibilities will include assessing and mitigating cybersecurity risks, implementing security measures, and conducting audits and inspections to ensure compliance with cybersecurity policies and regulations. This position requires strong knowledge of cybersecurity principles, attention to detail, analytical thinking, and a commitment to maintaining a secure cyber environment.

1. Cybersecurity Assessments: Conduct cybersecurity assessments and risk analyses to identify vulnerabilities and potential threats to information systems and networks. Evaluate system configurations, security controls, and access privileges. Provide recommendations for enhancing security posture and mitigating risks. Stay updated on emerging cyber threats and vulnerabilities.

2. Security Implementation: Implement and enforce cybersecurity measures to protect information systems and networks. Configure and monitor security tools, firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and other security technologies. Develop and enforce security policies and procedures. Collaborate with system administrators and network operators to ensure compliance with security requirements.

3. Incident Response and Investigations: Respond to cybersecurity incidents, including malware infections, unauthorized access, and data breaches. Conduct forensic investigations to determine the root cause and impact of security incidents. Coordinate with incident response teams to contain, mitigate, and recover from cyber incidents. Document and report incident details, actions taken, and lessons learned.

4. Audits and Inspections: Perform audits and inspections of information systems and networks to ensure compliance with cybersecurity policies, regulations, and best practices. Identify areas of non-compliance and develop corrective action plans. Collaborate with system owners and stakeholders to address security gaps and vulnerabilities.
